Split A Tab

Privacy Policy

Who we are

Split A Tab is operated by Cameron Givler. The service helps groups split a restaurant receipt by photo, available on the web at splitatab.com and as an iOS app.

What we collect

  • Account info: your phone number (used to sign you in), optional display name, optional payment handles/account identifiers, and your preferred payment method.
  • Receipts: the photo or PDF you upload, plus the parsed restaurant name, items, prices, fees, and total. We also store upload metadata such as upload identifiers, file type, file size, parse status, image classification result, and the account or device identifier associated with the upload.
  • Tab activity: which items you claimed and payments you recorded. We also assign your device a randomly generated identifier so we can remember you between visits before you sign in. After you sign in, analytics events may be associated with your account identifier so we can measure unique signed-in usage.
  • Technical: your IP address (used to prevent abuse), a sign-in session token, your browser/device locale, app platform, coarse browser/device diagnostics, product analytics events, receipt parsing reliability metrics, and diagnostic logs when something goes wrong.
  • Advertising (website only): when you visit our website, Google Ads sets advertising cookies and collects identifiers used to measure ad conversions and build remarketing audiences. This does not run in the iOS app.

How we use it

We use this data to render the receipt parser, run the splitting math, sync your tabs across devices, and prevent abuse. We do not sell your data. On our website we use Google Ads to measure ad conversions and to reach people who have visited the site (remarketing); to do this, the website shares browsing activity with Google, but not your name, email, or phone number. The iOS app does not include advertising tracking.

Third-party processors

We rely on the following processors to operate the service. When you upload a receipt, the image may be sent to any or all of our AI providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google) for structured-data extraction. We do not send your phone number, name, payment handles, or any other account information along with the image — the only data those providers see is whatever appears in the image itself.

Anthropic (Claude)

Receipt image, used to extract restaurant name, items, prices, and totals.

Privacy policy

OpenAI

Receipt image, used to extract restaurant name, items, prices, and totals.

Privacy policy

Google (Gemini, Firebase Auth, Firestore, Storage)

Receipt image sent to Gemini for structured-data extraction. Phone number for Firebase Authentication. Tab data and receipt images for Firestore and Cloud Storage. On iOS, Firebase Auth may use APNs silent notifications for phone-number verification.

Privacy policy

Vercel

Hosting and edge delivery. Vercel Analytics records aggregate, anonymous traffic data (no per-user identifiers).

Privacy policy

PostHog

Product analytics, page events, receipt parsing metrics, and diagnostic events. Event properties may include anonymous device identifiers, signed-in account identifiers, tab/upload identifiers, app platform, coarse browser/device diagnostics, error details, provider/model metrics, and basic tab amounts or counts. Used to measure feature usage and reliability.

Privacy policy

Google Ads

On our website only, the Google Ads tag sets advertising cookies and reports ad-conversion and remarketing data to Google, so we can measure which ad clicks lead to real usage. We do not send your name, email, phone number, or any account information to Google Ads — 'enhanced conversions' (which would share hashed contact details) is turned off, so only cookie/click identifiers are shared. This does not run in the iOS app.

Privacy policy

Payment providers (Venmo, Cash App, PayPal)

Optional payment handles or account identifiers you save for settlement links. When you choose to open a payment link, that provider may receive the recipient identifier, amount, and note included in the link. We do not move money or process payments.

Privacy policy

Payment providers

Linking payment handles to your account is optional. You can save accepted payment methods such as Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal. If a claimer chooses one, the “Pay” button may open that provider or its website with the recipient identifier, amount, and note included in the link where supported. We do not move money or process payments; the payment provider receives the details included in the link you choose to open. If you use a payment provider, your use of that service is governed by that provider’s own terms, including Venmo’s terms, which require you to be at least 18 years old.

Cookies & local storage

We use a sign-in session cookie to keep you logged in. We also store a small amount of data on your device so the app works between visits, including your name, payment handles, preferred payment method, account cache, session or bearer token, randomly generated identifier, tab-flow status, and app-review prompt counters. On our website, Google Ads additionally sets advertising cookies used for conversion measurement and remarketing; these are not set in the iOS app.

Data retention

Uploaded receipt photos and PDFs are retained for at least 1 year. We may retain your account, tabs, and receipt files indefinitely until you delete your account. Deleting your account is the way to remove this data — see “Your rights” below.

Your rights and how to exercise them

You can delete your account at any time from the “Settings” tab on the account screen, on either web or iOS. For other CCPA/GDPR-style requests (access, correction, portability), email support@splitatab.com.

When you delete your account, the following happens:

  • Your phone number, name, payment handles, and payment preferences are removed.
  • Tabs you created and the receipt photos on those tabs are deleted. People you shared those tabs with will no longer be able to see them.
  • Receipt-upload metadata and orphan receipt uploads tied to your account or linked device identifiers are deleted.
  • Claims you made on tabs created by other people are kept (so the tab creator’s settlement record stays accurate), but your name and payment handles on those entries are replaced with “Deleted account.”

Children

Split A Tab is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

International transfers

Your data may be processed in the United States by our hosting and AI processors (including Vercel, Firebase, Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Google Ads, PostHog, and any payment provider link you choose to open).

Changes to this policy

We will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page when this policy changes.
